How to add space without actually adding space!

If there’s one thing all house hunters are looking for when searching for a new home, it’s space. Whether they’re a single person living alone, a couple, or a family with young kids, all potential buyers will be looking to get as much space for their money as possible.

If your house is on the bijoux side, or if you just want to emphasise its generous proportions, there are a number of things you can do to make your home look bigger. Quick and easy, these simple steps will help you to make the most of the available space and wow visitors with your home’s Tardis-like qualities.

Clear the clutter

One of the easiest ways to give your home the illusion of space is to clear your clutter. Few things make a room feel more claustrophobic than heavily laden shelves, cluttered floors and endless ornaments. If you have the time, you could try clearing the room completely and giving it a thorough clean before returning only the most essential items to the space. Seeing the room empty will help you to see how cluttered it was before, and should make it easier to decide what goes back into the space.

Remove some furniture

Having too much furniture in a room will instantly make it feel smaller and more cramped. Remove any unnecessary furniture from the space, leaving just the items you use on a regular basis. If you can’t spare any furniture, you can make the space look bigger by investing in less bulky items. Sofas with thin, elegant legs, glass tables and floating shelves can all give the illusion of space while still providing you with the furniture you need.

Mirrors

Placing mirrors around your home will reflect the ambient light and make the rooms feel spacious and more airy. Ideally, you should place large mirrors in prominent spots around the house. Putting mirrors opposite windows and in hallways will make a big difference to the look and feel of your property.

Windows

If you currently have large, bulky curtains or dark blinds around your windows, you’ll find that replacing them with lighter coloured fabrics makes a big difference to your property. Helping to brighten the space up and let more light into your home, brighter, lighter curtains and blinds will help to maximise the space available in your property.

Doors

Replacing your standard doors with modern bi-fold or sliding doors is another good way to increase the useful space in your property. Easy to install, these space-saving doors will help you to make the most of every inch of your property.
