Effect of Premier League Promotion on Local Economy

As any self-respecting football fan will know, Norwich FC has recently topped off a fantastic season by being crowned winners of the Championship and gaining promotion to the Premier League. Their first appearance in the top flight since the 2015/16 season, this well-deserved promotion is set to mark the start of a new chapter in the club’s history.

As well as getting local residents excited about their club’s impressive achievements, Norwich’s promotion to the Premier League will give a real boost to the region’s economy. Helping to attract even more visitors to the city, and putting Norfolk on the map, the Canaries’ promotion to the Premier League is great news for the entire county.

Attracting visitors to the region

The Premier League is big business, with every top-flight game attracting tens of thousands of spectators. With Norwich soon to be playing against big names like Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool, the number of people visiting Norwich in the coming year is set to skyrocket. Although many of these football fans will be in the city for just a day, some will make a weekend of their trip and spend a little while exploring the many attractions and activities the region has to offer.

Pubs, bars and restaurants

When home and away fans travel to Norwich for games, they’re going to need to eat and drink. Game days in the city are likely to be busier than ever, with restaurants, pubs and bars seeing a real boost from home and away fans alike. If you own a business in Norwich, or if you work in hospitality in the city centre, the coming football season is sure to be one of your busiest periods ever.

Property

Having a team in the top flight of English football inevitably puts a city on the map. As a result, more and more people are likely to be attracted to Norwich and the surrounding area – something that could help to drive up house prices and increase demand for property in the area.

Even for non-football fans, the buzz created by Premier League games will help to make the city an even more exciting place to be. This should help to attract house hunters to the area and give local residents something to shout about.

Homeowners who rent rooms on Airbnb, and landlords who offer short-terms lets, should also see a boost in demand for their properties. Fans travelling from Newcastle, Liverpool and other far-flung destinations may well decide to stay in the city for the night rather than make the long journey home. This could drive up the cost of holiday lets in the area and increase demand for short-term rentals in the city.
