Although house prices around the UK are still going up – the average cost of a property has risen 6.5% to £234,794 – there are still some bargains to be had. Lord and lady of the manor
When Dunstan Low and his wife Natasha failed to attract any buyers for their £800,000 manor in Lancashire, the couple came up with a novel way of selling their home. Instead of going down the conventional route, they instead decided to raffle off their enormous property, giving one lucky person the chance to become lord or lady of the manor for just £2.
Once the competition went live, the couple received entries from all over the world, with people from as far afield as China, Belarus and America all investing in a ticket. By the time the raffle had closed, the couple had made a whopping £900,000 and finance worker Marie Segar had bagged herself a new home, and a new title, for just £2.
Family home for a fiver
In London, there’s an even better deal to be had with one homeowner opting to raffle her £1.25 million house off for £5 a ticket. Like Mr and Mrs Low, the owner of the London property was struggling to pay the mortgage and had tried and failed to sell their home on the open market. The owner hopes to sell 575,000 tickets and will donate £50,000 of the profits to charity.

Although raffling off properties can work well in some circumstances, the vast majority of homeowners are still opting to sell their houses the old fashioned way.
